Joe: A Filipino Rock'sical

"Hindi pwedeng dun ka lang sa gitna, you have to make a stand!" - Jocas

The Philippine Stagers Foundation has become one of my favorite theater groups after I had watched their "Ako si Ninoy" production. Then came "Cory ng EDSA" then... I craved for more. Luckily, this year, I got a chance (again) to see another masterpiece of Atty. Vincent TaƱada!

The play "Joe" revolves around the story of an award-winning playwright (Jose "Jocas" Castillo) and his friends and their six-month journey of finishing a play about the Philippine National Hero, Jose Rizal. It covers their life as play makers, friends, lovers and Filipinos. The play also gives a glimpse of the past by showing "untold" stories about Rizal's "real" relationship with Josephine Bracken.

What I love about the play is how it shows the relationship between arts and history. I find it brave enough to admit that arts, most specifically theatre, sometimes gives us discrepancies with facts and realities. I've been wanting to see (or make) a play talking about "Arts for arts sake" and finally, thiziziiit! As a thespian, I'm fully aware that sometimes in the field of performing arts (these days), we show what the audience wants to see not what the audience wants to know. But I still want to believe that in Theatre, there will be no safe side option. Arts will always make you choose between two sides, the brave one or the extremely courageous one... or die (okay, I'll reserve this part for another post haha!). I also liked the "sacrifice" angle of the story. It's like... Theatre, history or love?... or die again? Kidding!

As expected, I had a crush on their stage design, music and choreography. They used rock music, as their title suggests but hmmm... they had a little hard time pulling that off. I still like them doing ballads and the like. Nonetheless, they were still great!
